NDO – The International Forum on Women, Peace and Development officially opened at the Centre for Women and Development in Hanoi on October 6.
The two day forum, organised by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU), was attended by Politburo member and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan, and over 100 Vietnamese and international women delegates.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, VFF President Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed his hope that the forum would provide international delegates a good opportunity to learn more about the position and role of women in Vietnam.
It is also expected to create a venue for women to work together and share information, thereby enhancing understanding, solidarity, friendship and co-operation for the goal of equality, development and peace, the VFF President added.
As an organisation representing Vietnamese people from all walks of life, including women, the VFF would be delighted to receive recommendations from delegates at the forum on issues related to women in Vietnam in order to propose the Party and State promulgate better policies for women, he noted.
As part of the forum, a tour of the Vietnam Women’s Museum and a field trip to a rural micro-credit project will be organised to help the international delegates learn more about the women’s movement in Vietnam and the historical role played by the Vietnam Women’s Union.
The event is taking place on the occasion of 85th anniversary of the VWU’s foundation, the 70th anniversary of the UN, 70th anniversary of the Women’s International Democratic Federation, and the review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration (Beijing+20) and the Millennium Development Goals.
